The Succulent Garden at
Cal State Bakersfield
Echinocereus coccineus Englem."Claret Cup Cactus"

Claret cup cactus is native to the Southwestern United States from California to Texas. It is cold hardy down to about 15 degrees F. This is a reliable bloomer in our garden, putting on a display every early April. The clump has grown slowly but steadily over the years and would make an excellent addition to anyone's garden.

There is some doubt as to whether this is actually E. coccineus and not E. mohavensis (formerly E. triglochidiatus). The plants are closely related and we have yet to put in the effort to see if it can be accurately identified.
