| Cheiridopsis pillansii | |

The leaves are a little bit too rounded for pillansii, but that was the name of the seeds I planted and is what I'll call this one until convinced otherwise. |

Bug's eye view. This has done well in the hot sun. |

This Cheiridopsis has unusual 'barbed' leaves. It has done well with a little shade and tends to burn in the full sun. |
| CULTIVATION INFORMATION | |
|
Cheiridopsis are winter growing mesembs that go dormant during the dry, hot summer. Many form papery
sheaths over the leaves during dormancy (However, my C. pillansii and C. velox do not). During dormancy they
can withstand severe drought but seem to tolerate a little water as well. During the fall, after growth has begun again, they
will take considerable water and swell greatly. Cheiridopsis are easily started from seed, though it prefers cooler temperatures for germination (around 65F/18C). I start mine in the Fall. Growth is usually fast. Cheiridopsis do well in pots and many will flower in a 3 inch container. |
