The stick grows!

Acquired 16 August 2003 at the Inter-City Show (Grigsby's).
Picture taken on 9 Nov 2003.

The small buds that were on the plant in August have enlarged considerably this fall.

CULTIVATION: Obviously a winter grower, but I really haven't had it long enough to get to know it.

Just a baby

Planted from seed on 17 February 2003
Picture taken on 9 Nov 2003.

CULTIVATION: The seedlings stayed green throughout the summer but look better now that fall has come. I lost a few to rot after transplanting the young seedlings to individual pots in the summer (I'll wait until fall to transplant next time).

PROPOGATION: Easy from seed.

First Growth of Fall

Planted from seed on 15 February 1998
Pictures taken on 8 Nov 2003.

This plant was in the ground for three years and then was put into a pot when the bed it was in became too shady.

HABIT: A sprawling, floppy plant that develops an underground caudex.

CULTIVATION: P. tenuiflorus has been strictly a winter grower, going completely dormant during the summer. During dormancy it sheds it's stems and all that is visible is the caudex which should be kept very dry (and mine are also kept out of the full sun). Like many of the caudex-forming mesembs care should be taken to water sparingly late in the growing season (Spring) as well as during dormancy (Summer). It comes quickly into flower after the fall growth starts.

PROPOGATION: It is easily raised from seed. Mine did very well planted in the early Spring while it was still cool.
