Issue 9:11 THE CACTUS PATCH November 2006

The Succulent Garden at Cal State
by Linda Cooley

Today was the first Sunday in November so we met out at the garden to do some work. (We have established the first Sunday of the month as our garden work day, just in case you want to put it on your calendars....) When we arrived at the garden, it seemed different....I kept trying to figure out what they had done to the big Cottonwood tree, but it wasn't the tree that was different! It was our garden---they have finally removed the "cage" around the pump! So maybe this means that someday soon the pump will be gone as well. When that happens, we will have to decide what to put in that space. I am leaning toward a greenhouse to grow some of the more tropical succulents, but we shall see what we can come up with! Some of the "regulars" who usually bring pickups were not able to attend today, so we borrowed a pickup and got 45 blocks to finish the little curved retaining wall in the "Old World" section of the garden. It is all finished and looks great! We also planted a cactus (I don't know what it is....) There were mesembs blooming, and the big Peruvian column cactus was blooming. Most of the plants were responding to the cooler weather and the water they got two weeks ago. Next month we hope to start on some walkways. We will need help getting concrete (or cement...) and also will need help digging, raking, etc. I am going to try out the "soil cement" technique before then so maybe we will have some idea of what we are doing!

Hope to see some of you then.

PS. the next workday will be Dec.3., 9 to 11 or 12....
